Research and Planning- Health and Safety

Health and Safety;
Potential Danger
Potential Outcomes
Actions to Avoid Potential Outcomes
Benefits to filming in this Location
Do the Benefits outweigh the Risks?
Getting cold outside.
Actors and crew who are helping can get ill from the cold.
Make sure when off camera all actors and crew are wearing coats to keep them warm.
Everybody involved is in charge of bringing and putting on their own coat to keep warm.
yes
Tripping over the tripod.
Actors, crew and members of the public could end up injured.
Keep the tripod out the way of the public as much as possible and make it clear that there’s a potential danger. Eg- gaffer tape around the area of the tripod
I’ll take responsibility for putting down gaffer tape if I use the tripod and wherever I place the tripod.
yes
Laura’s high heels.
She could trip over and injure herself.
Do as little movement as possible whilst wearing the shoes, if a change of location takes place then the shoes must be changed to sensible ones.
Laura is responsible for bringing her own pair of sensible shoes but i will make sure she changes them.
yes
Tripping over lighting kit power cables.
Injuring self. Electrocution.
Cables are to be gaffer taped to the floor for the duration of the shoot.
This will be my responsibility to make sure i have the gaffer tape and all cables are taped down.

Research and Planning- Cast

Laura Davis;
Main girl (the star/ singer)
Laura will be the main girl and therefore will be performing the narrative parts and I will also have her just singing in various locations. I think she's suitable because she has the right style, and i know she's reliable to work with.

 Rob Maddison;
Main Guy; He'll only be performing the narrative parts of my music video. I think he's suitable because i feel he has the "right look". Rob and Laura also already know each other, and therefore will have the right sort of chemistry I'm looking for in my video. Laura and Rob also live close together, which is close to my location where the majority of the video will be filmed, therefore I know he'll be reliable.

Research and Planning- Changes

After i started creating my digipak, i listened to my song again and looked at my plan. i then realised that due to my previous changes that the pictures and song dint particularly match. I then listened to more songs the artist I've chosen has made. I've decided to change it to a slightly slower song, which i feel matches the colour, outfit and location on the pictures I've already taken.
The song I've not chosen is called "Emergency"

Making the digipak

one of my photos
I went out and took some photos of my new star, i found that some of these photos turned out to be very good and not need much editing at all. Here's an example of one.

Once I put this picture onto my digipak template, I found the colour of the photo needed slightly editing. The colour of her skin looked slightly grey so I changed it to become more red.

Research and planning- Changes

Due to the star of my music video and print work becoming unreliable, I've had to change (at last minute) who I'm starring in my video. Because it was last minute I've also had to change the location of which the photo shoot is being held. My new location is now in the woods rather than on a high street.

Print Planning- Locations

My idea was to take all the photos on Worcester high street. This is because it goes with the idea of Banksy's art work, being outside, on wall, in the public. But it's also easy for both my and Rhianna (who's the main star of my video and therefore my print work too) and me to get to with no problems.

Print Planning- ideas for pictures

Since Banksy's art work is my inspiration, I've taken some of his art work and adapted it. These are just a few sketches of idea's of what the pictures for my print work will look like.

Banksy's Work

My idea
Banksy's art.
This is one of my ideas...
My 2nd idea.
Banksy's
My work.

Print Planning

My inspiration for my print work is the artist Banksy. This is because all of his work has some sort of meaning behind it which will effect society and individuals themselves. Along with this i feel his work also appeals to the same age as my target audience (14-18).

Print Research

I think the importance of print work differs from artists to artist. With a main stream artist such as Cheryl Cole, digipak's aren't that important as her main audience are young teenagers who are more likely to download there music, and will never see or need to see the digipak. But digipak's for less main stream artist's, like folk, acoustic, country, because they're less well known, and there target audience ages is much higher than main stream artists (which also means they're less likely to download) is very important. Older generations are much more likely to buy the c.d than to download, there for an appealing digipak which is kind to the eye is needed to draw attention to it. The advertising poster is very much the same through-out whatever genre, and artist. The poster (whether it's in a magazine or on the internet), is still advertising and still needs to look appealing and draw attention to the audience.

Print Research- advertising poster

The first advert I researched was Paramore's. I really like this poster as its original and very quirky, like the band. The image of the bands been made large so you can clearly see its them, with a picture of there digipak front next to it. alongside this is the name of the album and the realise date. I think the poster is very eye catching. the lightings simple and natural looking. I like how the backgrounds been made to make it look like its a board with all the other images pinned onto it. The font is the font the band use for all adverts and digipaks they have. There isn't really a star image being created here as its just a plain picture of the band with the lead singer closer to the camera to make her stand out more. On the top right hand corner there's a number to text to get the ring tone of a song they've realised. The size of the adverts about half a page of A4. I think this is a good size and will probably use it for my advert. The target audience for this band is similar to my own. It ranges from 14-18, and mostly appeals to girls. I think this adverts a bit redundant as its quirky like the band and you except them to do it, but its also entropic because it's original and not a common way to advertise a band.
The second advert I've researched is from the band All Time Low. I like the filter effect on this advert, i think it makes it more original. the band are the main image of this poster, with the lead singer slightly closer to the camera so more of the focus is on him. The whole adverts been made quite cartoon like, so around the image of the band is a yellow line. This makes the advert quite quirky. The font is the font the band uses with every album cover, advert and if its in the music video. I like how at the bottom of the page there's where you can buy the c.d from and a picture of the album cover. Just above the picture of the band it says when the realise date is. and below the big name of the band is where to find them on Myspace.
The Advert is an A4 size, which is good because it means there can be more information added onto the poster, which is something I may want to consider. I think the adverts quite redundant, because if you listened to the music of the band, you can tell they're quite quirky and fun like this poster itself.
The target audience for this band is again similar to my target audience. (14-18)

Print Research- Digipak

The first album I looked at was from "the Pretty Reckless".  The image is showing her to have a real rock chick style to her like her songs, yet she's being portrayed as angelic and quite innocent. The Shots a Mid shot to close shot. This is so you can get full detail of her make-up as its quite big and an important feature of her style, but it shows some of her body which shows a prerogative view of her. The background to the image is very plain but this is because her costume is very  detailed. This means all the focus goes onto her. The lightings simple, and makes all the colours much more intense looking. This Digipak cover doesn't challenge the convention on the genre as the stars portraying the genre through her costume and make-up. This links into the stars image, which is very rock chic looking and does go alongside her music style.
The font of the Digipak colour is the same font the band use for all digipak's and adverts. It fits the genre perfectly. The layout's simple, it shows the main star, and it shows clearly the name of the band and the album name. As the Stars the main image of the digipak she's taken up the majority of the page and then the writings in the left hand corner. This reinforces the fact she's the star. On this particular cover there aren't any thank you's and no clear copyright signs or any links to buy the album off itunes. This digipak is redundant as it gives the full message of the star. This suits the genre of The Pretty Reckless's music.
Although people tend to download music more than go in shops to buy the c.d, i still think the digipak cover is very important. I think this because when downloading off itunes or other websites the album cover is still shown. It's useful to the artist to have an appealing digipak cover as it draws attention to buying the c.d or the album over itunes. Going back to people buying c.d's in shops, it again draws attention to the consumer. This is a good marketing technique for the artist.

The Next digipak I've researched is "the Veronicas". I like how the front of the digipak isn't an actual picture of them, but its a drawn picture of them. the back has 2 pictures of the girls, I like how one of them its slightly filter and in pink and the other is them creating a slight frame around the other picture. I think it's an original idea. The images connote a mischievous look to the girls. Although all of the images of the girls themselves have been cut out of there mise en scene, behind the pictures on the back of the digipak covers is a picture of a street. The lighting in this is very natural looking, but you can see the sun peaking out between the trees. This connotes a slightly more innocent look to "the Veronicas". The whole digipak itself has a very quirky look to it, which is use the conventions of the genre well. The font on the front of the cover is simple and easy to read, yet it has a roundness too it which could connote an angelic side to the girls. This also shows the Veronicas have a set star image of an angelic and quirky look. At the bottom of the back of the digipak is the copy right.

Research and Planning- Andrew Goodwin

Goodwin has 5 aspects to analysing music videos.

1- Synaesthesia- this is seeing sound
Firstly you need to look at the structure of the song. (choruses and verses) The You need to look at the voice of the performer. If a voice is unique it can be well remembered. This effects the star image. And Thirdly, mode of address. The video can be giving a story and the artist if the story teller.

2-Narrative and Performance
Song fail to give us a complete narrative, the music video fills in the blanks for us. Goodwin says we should ignore common narrative. As the music video is important in the role of advertising the artists song. Having an interested narrative and performance makes is easier for the audience to watch to video countless times without loosing interest.

3- The Star Image
Music video's will include lots of close up's of the star. This is another part of the visual aspect. The star will also play a part in the narrative. This will also have an effect on their star persona.

4- Relation of visual to Song
This includes;
Illustrate- A set of images to illustrate the meaning of the song. It takes the lyrics and song literately. This used to be very popular.
Amplify- the meaning of the song is added by the visuals. The visual aspects create a layer of meaning to the song. This makes the audience thing about what the song really means. This is a popular idea.
Disjunctive- Where the video and the song are completely different.

5-Technical Aspects of Music Video
Technical aspects hold the music video together through use of camerawork, movement, angle, mise-en-scene editing, sound and special effects.Lighting and colour help set mood and emotion. They emphasise key moments of the song for dramatic effect. music videos cut on the beat to add emphasis to the audio track.

Research and Planning- Creativity

I feel creativity comes from one person. It's the freedom for them to "create" anything they feel is exciting or they view as art. Art and creativity comes from the inner emotions allowing them to make something individual. It can be done in different forms, through drawing, painting, singing, dancing, acting etc.
"Creativity is original idea's that have value"- Sir Ken Robinson.
A personal example of mine is in both GCSE dance where I had to choreograph my own dance piece, in Art GCSE where we had to create individual pieces. Also in my Performing arts lessons we get a chance to be creative and put on our own performance.
This Week I've researched further and create a mood board of other artist's videos and images. I've also created a story board of a few ideas i had for my song and costumes to go along with it. These are all temporary idea's ready for when i start planning.

Creativity is limited, this is caused from education. You become creative by making mistakes,and doing things wrong, to become original. Yet in education, mistakes are seen as very bad and are whipped out of children from a young age. Schools have educational hierarchy's, they start with Maths and English, then onto humanities and at the bottom are the arts.

Here's some of my work whilst i was being creative.This is a collage of the artist Banksy. I've studied him as an artist before and i really like his work. I think this will be a big inspiration in either my video or the print work.

Research and planning- Music Video Research

The song I've chosen is This Love- Maroon 5. This genre is also Pop/rock.
The introduction to the song starts with shots of the band sitting around. The lighting quite natural. then it cuts to an image of the lead singer of the band, again with natural lighting. For the rest of the introduction the clips continue cutting between the band and the lead singer who's with a girl. for the verses the video is the lead singer with the girl, the first verse is him being rejected by her and then walking off, (which is almost literal to the song lyrics)
and the second verse he's again with the girl and again its almost literal to the lyrics. All the chorus's he's singing with his band, like its a performance. The bridge is different, the cuts and the edits are very fast, and off beat which doesn't follow the process of synaesthesia like Goodwin suggests.
Although the songs about negative feelings, the music itself is quite upbeat. The costumes and the backgrounds show this through Goonwin's theory of synaesthesia.
during the verses the video does have a narrative, But it misses our vital pieces of information about the relationship he actually has with the girl so this leaves the audience to use there imagination. During the chorus's there isn't any narrative, it's just clips of the band playing together.
This is the edit i thought was quite significant
The story is based around the lead singer Adam Levine. There's a lot of close up's of him when he's singing in the choruses with the band. During the the verses the camera very much focus's on his story, both during the first scene where the girls rejecting him and the second sex scene. This links back to Goodwin's theory of the stars persona. The camera very much concentrates on the star. The videos very much giving the star a classic "Rock Star" persona. eg- "Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll" as this is the first song Maroon 5 released there showing there audience the kind of band they want to be.
The Video consists of a lot of close ups and a lot of of master shots. But one thins i noticed that was quite significant is the bridge, the editing in this is something that's not very common in music videos. The cuts are quite but there's also a filter over the images.All the edits are cut to the beat which links back into Goodwin's theory of syneathesia.

This videos amplifying, it has a story line that's irrelevant to the content of the song. Yet on the other hand it is related to it in one way. Some of the scenes from the video link into the lyrics, and other scenes don't. which make it part Disjunctive.

Research and Planning- Music Video Research

This first video is Paramore- Brick by Boring Brick. The genre is punk/pop rock.Each cut in the video is made the the beat but its very discrete.
This image cuts straight to this one... its on the beat but its very discrete but makes it run smoothly.
The Pace of the editing is very slow and smooth. The music isn't actually slow but its very calm as are the lyrics. Near the end of the song, when the bridge kicks in, the music livens up and becomes less calm and the editing changes too. The cuts become quicker and the lighting becomes music darker to match the music.
For the verses, although the clips are always different, there similar to one another in what's actually being shown. e.g- For the verse it's always one of two images....
OR

The Chorus's are again the same, the little girl continues to explore this "magical" looking place, and Hayley Williams (the main women)Stays by the hole that's being dug the whole time. Although, in the verses she tends but standing up more and in the chorus's she seems to be sitting around the hole.

The First 23 seconds of the song is an introduction, with only music. The musics smooth in this part and quite repetitive, during this the image goes from watching the wind blow leaves with the camera moving forward as if the winds blowing it too, and then as the music slightly becomes more jumpy the camera cuts to see the little girl running to the beat. Other than that there's no other examples of synaesthesia. The is Goodwin's theory of seeing the sound.

The Majority of this videos is narrative. The video cuts to and from shots of a girl running and exploring this magical land. and shots to an adult women singing.

Although the video doesn't actually tell us this but it looks a though the adult women is the little girl when she's grown up. The story in the video is the story of the little girl and we see everything she doesn't right until the end of the video. The part of the story which is withheld is the part which explain to us where the girl is, what all the creatures and people she see's are,
and why she falls in the hole at the end, other than that we see her whole story.
In the story the star (Hayley Williams) is portrayed to have a very innocent look about her. She's wearing a white dress which has values of creating innocence. Also the lighting behind her as a very golden look to it which also portrays good and evil, the gold's portraying good. Goodwin would use this to explain the star image. Through out the video there are a lot of shots of the star and the little girl. The majority of which are either close ups or mid-shots. The camera pans a lot, and doesn't do very many other movements. There's a lot of editing in this video. The first bit we see is at the very beginning when The women's swinging on the swing, its been made into slow motion. A lot of this video will of been made in the edit suit. For example though-out the whole video leaves are falling down, this will have been done in the edit suit.
This is another example of a part of the video that had been done in the edit suit. Behind the knight are lots of cartoon looking giant mushrooms. This isn't a common feature that is found in music videos and it makes this one quite unique. The mise en scene in this video also contributes to it being unique. A lot of the scenery and the costumes are made to look like a fairy tale. (the knight, the castle, the girls in dresses and the golden filter on the lighting.)Also some of the characters and there costumes in the video add a "child's story book" look to the video.

This video has many characteristics as to why is amplifying. One of which is because it does have story to it, but it's not necessarily the true meaning of the song. The videos been given an extra layer of meaning. Having said that, there are some aspects to the music video which suggest its disjunctive. Some parts are the video are completely irrelevant to the song, but nevertheless they work well. But also, within this, some parts of the video take a literal meaning. "bury the castle" and through-out the song somebody's digging a whole, whilst a little girl is discovering the castle.

Research and Planning- making the busted video

During the making of the busted music video I found the hardest part was actually making the shot list to it was identical to the original video. Although whilst making my own music video I know this problem wont occur. The other thing I found to be slightly hard was trying to lip sync. but I know with practice this will get easier.

Tuesday 20 September 2011

A2 Tasks- Research and planning.

When planning and researching I found the most useful task was creating a shot list. This was because it saved a lot of time when actually shooting because we didn't have to keep stopping to discuss amongst ourselves. I personally think that we should of researched further into props and costume. (e.g. we didn't have a pencil with us )In future we need to be more prepared.

This is a preview of our storyboard;

This is our shotlist

For the Main project when we plan we'll have to;
make a shot list, story board, cast list, prop list, and health and safety.

Cast List;
Rosie-Teacher
Jay-Boy1
Tom-Boy2
Sam-Boy3
Chrissy- Girl1
Charlotte- Girl 2
Rest of group are filming and directing or extra's to fill up the classroom to make it look more realistic.

A2 Tasks- Production.

With-in the edit suit (Premier pro)I found syncing the audio with the clips (lip syncing) perfecting was a new experience and I found it quite hard and a lot of work to begin with. But I've now realised it's a very useful skill to have.

A2 Tasks- what we did.

First of all we did a lip sync task. This was preparing us for when we do our coursework and make a music video. The point of this task was to show us how much time and effort goes in to lip syncing well. From this I learnt how hard it is to get it dead on else it'll make the video look bad.
The second task we did was making the first 30-50 seconds of the Busted- "that's what I go to school for". This task was to show us how hard it was to actually make a music video, and it was a practice for us for when we make the our real music video. This task taught me how time consuming planning, filming and editing was. I realised how many clips we had to make of just one shot to get the angel and positioning perfect. I'll take all this into consideration when preparing for my music video.

Introduction

This years coursework project is creating a music video and making a digipack to go with it.
The band I've chosen are not yet established. They're called "Rara and the Vine project" The song I've chosen is called "who needs you now".
